PP~'I u~ 61nc!CS I ~CSIS
~ Irk 1~8~
vi
ABSTRACT

Preferred Temperature of Colorado squawfish (Ptychocheilus lucius)
and its Relations ..with Age and Growth Rate
by
Tamara Black, Master of Science
Utah State University, 1982
Major Professor: Dr. Ross V. Bulkley
Department: Fisheries and Wildlife Science
Temperature preference of Colorado squawfish, Ptychocheilus
lucius, was determined for both juvenile and adult fish in a horizon-
tal gradient trough. Fish were acclimated to 14, 20, and 26 C, and
twenty juveniles and ten adults were tested from each acclimation tem-
perature. Acute preferenda (mean of individual modes) were plotted
against .acclimation temperature to estimate final preferendum. Acute
preferenda of juveniles were 21.9,-27.6, and 23.7 C for 14, 20 and 26
C -acclimated fish, respectively. Acute preferenda of adults were
21.5, 22.5, and 25.7-C-for 14, 20, and 26 C -acclimated fish, respec-
tively. Adult and juvenile squawfish appear to have the same final
thermal preferenc4um, approximately 25 C.
Growth rate of juvenile Colorado squawfish was determined over a
12-week period at four different temperatures (15, 20, 25, and 30 C)
