Perkinsville into a wide, alluvial valley (Camp Verde) before
entering a narrow, low gradient river valley ca. $0 km long,
downstream to Horseshoe Lake. Oak Creek, and to a lesser extent
West Clear and Wet Beaver creeks, are largely modified in lower
portions by diversions, gravel pits, and housing developments
which exceed natural riverine conditions.
Methods
Stocking of razorback sucker was by USl'WS and AGFD personnel
and equipment. The Salt and Gila rivers and tributaries were
stocked with fry and fingerling suckers reared at Dexter National
Fish Hatchery. Verde River stockings were of fingerlings reared
at Page Springs Hatchery (PSH) from Dexter produced fry.
Stocking strategies for fish size, number, location, method, and
time of year are discussed by Brooks et al. (In prep.).
Monitoring surveys were conducted in the Gila, Salt, and
Verde rivers and tributaries in proximity to razorback
introduction sites. Collections were by seines, hoop, gill and
trammel nets and electrofishers (backpack, raft, or boat). In
March 1985, netting and electrofishing surveys were conducted on
mainstem downstream reservoirs in attempts to collect pre-
spawning adults stocked as fry and fingerlings early in the
program (Brooks et al. In prep.). Near shore aggregation on
gravel/cobble bars, indicative of pre-spawn staging in Lake
Mohave razorback suckers (Minckley 1983), would presumably make
collections of adult razorback more likely. ~
-3-
