SECTION 2 - HUMAN ACTIVITIES THAT ALTER STREAM CORRIDORS
Mining
The lure of mineral wealth brought the first large
wave of Euro-American settlers to Colorado. For
150 years, mining has been an important activity
in the state.
How Mining Impacts Stream Corridors
• Deposition of mine tailings in riparian areas
• Acid mine drainage from abandoned mines
• Stream channel and riparian area alteration
and loss of habitat
• Channel disturbance from gravel operations
Lessening Our Negative Impact
• Stabilize and revegetate tailings
• Direct surface drainage away from mine sites
• Treat polluted water
• Avoid mining in stream channels and
riparian areas
Invasive Species
Invasive species are plants, animals, and microbes that colonize areas
outside their native ranges. Invasive species can take over certain habitats,
push out native species, and reduce forage for wildlife and livestock.
Overgrazing by livestock (and wildlife) can facilitate establishment of
invasive species. Harmful invasive species include noxious weeds
and other aggressive plants, many of which are especially prevalent in
floodplains. Examples include Canada thistle, hoary cress, perennial
pepperweed, Russian knapweed, purple loosestrife, tamarisk, and
Russian olive. Invasive animals in Colorado include certain species of
crayfish, and some fish species such as carp and northern pike.
Line Drawing from: Creating an Integrated Weed Management Plan.
CNAP

CL
0
0
U
a
Q
0
0
a
U
x
z
T

25
Peru Creek at Penn Mine
North Fork of the Gunnison River
