liter per minute. The fish were transported from Ouray NWR to Red Wash boat
ramp, river mile index (RMI) 298.0 on the Green River. The ramp is
approximately 6 miles south of Hwy. 40, off Hwy. 264, east of the town of
Jensen, Utah. The fish were removed from the transport tank, via 5 gal.
bucket, into two 80 quart plastic ice chests. These ice chests, which were
setup on the floor of a 16 ft. john boat, were filled up 3/4 of the way with
water from the river. The fish were tempered by filling up the 5 gal. bucket
halfway with river water, and halfway with transport tank water. The fish
were allowed to sit for 5 minutes in the bucket prior to being released into
the ice chests. The fish were then transported to the individual stocking
sites by boat.
Stocking Sites
The stocking sites were preselected from a backwater sampling trip 3 weeks
prior to the initial release into the river (8 Sept. 88). The sites were
chosen for their ease of both vehicle and boat accessibility, numbers of
backwaters in the vicinity, depth, size, and close proximity to a known
razorback spawning area. The sites originally chosen were backwater habitats
at the following Green River locations: RMI 296.0, RNLI 297.0, RNLI 297.5, and
RNII 297.8. The backwater at RM1 296.0 was aborted due to difficulty in
initially finding it, and a backwater at RMI 295.5 was substituted in its
place. After initial release of fish into RNII 295.5, it was discontinued as a
stocking site due to the difficulty in traversing the numerous sandbars in its
location. All subsequent stockings occurred only at RMI 297.0, RMI 297.5, and
RNLI 297.8. Prior to the initial release of fish on September 8, 1988, both
physical and biological measurements were taken at all sites. These included
depths, widths, lengths, substrates, turbidity, (Table 1) and fish species
present (Table 2).
max. avg. avg.
depth depth length width area substrate turbidity
(ft.)
