2. Limnology
Once five study sites are selected, a more thorough analysis of
biotic and abioti-- features will be conducted: The basic limnologi-
cal data outlined above will be collected at a minimum of once per
month for the duration of the study. Temperature and DO readings will
be taken at the surface, mid-depth, and bottom. DO will be measured with
a Hach Model OX-2P DO test kit; temperature and conductivity with a
Yellow Springs Model 33 S-C-T meter; and transparency with a standard
21 cm dia. secchi disc.
3• Fish Community Composition
Population estimates of largemouth bass present in each pond will
be made using the Peterson-Lincoln mark-recapture estimator as modi
fied by Chapman (1951). Electrofishing, seining, and trammel-netting
will be used to capture bass for the population estimates. Captured
fish will be marked with a pelvic fin-clip, measured for Total Length,
and then released. Because the Peterson-Lincoln estimator does not
require constant effort, data gathered with the different gear types
will be combined. Separate estimates will be made for three size-
classes of bass; small (90-160 mm TL), medium (161-280 mm TL), and
large (281-450 mm TL).
Seines will be of two different sizes; one 30.5 m long x 1.8 m deep
and the other 137 m long x 2,4 m deep, both with 6 mm mesh. Trammel
nets will be of 2.5 cm bar mesh with a 25.4 cm mesh outer wall and
45.0 m long x 1.8 m deep. Electrofishing will employ a 4.9 m boom-shock-
ing boat equipped with a Coffelt WP-25 unit and 4.0 kilowatt, 220-volt
generator.
Relative abundance of forage-sized fish (C70 mm long) will be deter-
mined using seining. The seine.used will be the smaller of the two
described above. The number of seine hauls per pond during each seining
effort will be based on one haul per 61 m of shoreline. A minimum of
two seining efforts will be made at each pond each summer. Individuals.
of each species will be counted. The lengths of 20 randomly selected
individuals of each species will be measured in each of five randomly
selected seine hauls at each pond for length frequency analysis.
4. Squawfish Stocking
Colorado squawfish 40-145 mm long (TL) will be stocked at a rate of
3090 per hectare in each of the ponds a total of three times. The first
32
