gonadotropin (HCG). Male fish received a dosage of one shot HCG at 300
International Units (IU) per kg of body weight. Female fish received a dosage
of three shots HCG at 150 IU per shot per kg of body weight. Records indicate
that atleast 33 fish were held at Ouray NWR (Table 3). Seventeen of these fish
were females, 15 fish were males, and in one fish the sex was undeterminable.
Five of these fish died at Ouray NWR (2 females, 2 males, 1 unknown sex), and
one fish died in transit to a release site 11 May. It is not known exactly
which of the fish received hormone injections, or how often the injections were
made (no records). Also, if the female fish received hormone injections on the
first day of capture, data suggests that it took anywhere from 1-12 days for
the fish to become ripe enough to express eggs. Post-analysis of the hormone
injected fish revealed that the injections were not very successful in
achieving the desired/expected results (H.M. Tyus - personal communication).
Lanigan (1987) reports that in early collection efforts, three female fish
were stripped and fertilized on the spawning grounds with 1-3 male fish. On 20
April, one ripe female and two ripe males were captured. The field data sheet
for this date has the words "milt" and "eggs" indicated on it. It is unsure
whether this indicates that the fish were ripe, or that both sex products were
collected. On 23 April, one ripe female, one ripe male, and two non-ripe
females were captured. It is possible that the ripe female and male were
stripped, but the field data sheet does not indicate this. On 24 April, one
ripe female, one non-ripe female, and three ripe males were captured. The
field data sheet for this date also has the words "milt" and "eggs" indicated
on it. Again, it is unsure whether this indicates that the fish were ripe, or
that both sex products were collected. The ripe fish captured on the above
mentioned dates certainly match the statement made by Lanigan. However, if sex
products were collected from these fish in the field, the eventual disposition
