Colorado Rockies Regional <br />Cooperative <br />0 <br />August, 1994 <br />Setting and scope Promote research needs and application, education and demonstration related to <br />economic development and ecosystem principles, and to extend public service <br />with regard to biodiversity, resource management and human/wildland <br />interface. To enhance information sharing, coordination, cooperative research <br />and education and to affiliate with the USMan and the Biosphere Program as a <br />regional cooperative. Ecoregion defined at the Rocky Mountain Forest and Great <br />Plains Shortgrass Prairie Provinces within the steppe Division of the Dry Domain <br />(Bailey, 1980). <br />Issues/problems being Address needs for data base development (GIS), cooperative research, dealing <br />addressed with biodiversity, ecosystem management and human wildland interface and <br />educational initiatives at the agency, state, county, and city level of the <br />participating members. <br />• Participants MOU signed in 1992 consisting of 14 entities. Core group consists of Rocky <br />Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station, Colorado State University, <br />• Rocky Mountain NP, Colorado Division of Wildlife, Arapaho/Roosevelt NF, <br />Boulder County, Larimer County, The Nature Conservancy, and US Geological <br />Survey, University of Colorado, City of Boulder, City of Fort Collins, Colorado <br />State Forest Service, and US Fish and Wildlife Service/NBS. <br />Sources of technical input Archived database information (GIS when available) from all participating <br />agencies. <br />Brief history and present Idea of a regional cooperative initiated in October, 1989. Early discussion <br />status centered around the status of nationally designated biosphere reserves and their <br />role in fostering cooperative research. A vision statement was prepared in 1990 <br />which set the stage for "promote knowledge and understanding of the natural <br />and human resources of this region, to encourage wise use of these resources <br />through research; database development and integration; education; and the <br />demonstration of principles for ecosystem management..." Continued efforts are <br />underway to develop a regional data base at Colorado State University, initiate <br />cooperative research projects, promote environmental education, and provide <br />technical support for resource management and land use decisions consistent <br />with ecosystem values and goals. <br />Funding sources Project specific funding initiatives.
