Bald Mountain Basin Coordinated
Resource Management Plan
• Craig District
Little Snake Resource Area
August, 1994
•

?n
^? n
Setting and scope Bald Mountain Basin begins approximately three miles north of Maybell,
Colorado and includes six grazing allotments totalling 120,765 acres of federal,
state, and private lands.
Boundaries of the area were based on the vegetation concerns related to wildlife
and livestock use and incorporated grazing allotment boundaries because of the
primary administrative unit that they represent.
The basin is used by big game (elk, deer, antelope) particularly in the winter and
early spring, and by livestock (sheep and cattle, a few horses) primarily spring
through fall (some winter).
Issues/problems being The purpose of this effort is to address livestock/wildlife conflict, along with
addressed additional concerns about hunting access, off-road vehicle use, riparian
improvement, watershed conditions, and plant diversity. Other issues include
biodiversity, weeds, predators, water availability, flexibility for future uses, and
threatened and endangered species. Long term sustainability of beneficial use of
the resources is the overall goal.
The effort is considering total land function and management and is oriented to
the management of natural systems.
Participants Participants include permittees/landowners, BLM, State Land Board, SCS, CSU
Range Department, CO DOW, CSU Extension Service, Little Snake Motorcycle
Club, sportsmen' representatives, and a representative from Northwest
Colorado Riparian Task Force.
Sources of technical input Sources of technical input are the same as listed under Participants.
Brief history and present BLM/SCS conducted an ecological site inventory during 1993. The inventory
status was the basis for formulating the desired plant communities. The team is
formulating a plan with a draft prepared in mid 1994.
Funding sources Funding for planning is being contributed by the participants.
Contact Ozzie Kerste, Range Conservationist, Little Snake Resource Area, Craig
(303) 824-4441
0
