OBJECTIVES
This report addresses results of Vernal Field Station activites during
the 1982-1984 CRFMP, a 1965 work statement and agreement between FWS and BR,
and other research and recovery activities. This includes development of
criteria for UCRBCC sensitive areas report (1982-1985) and investigations of
the distribution and life history requirements of razorback sucker (Xyrauchen
texanus) and humpback chub (Gila cypha) (1984-1986). Results of the latter
two studies are reported here for completeness of record. This report builds
upon a preliminary summary of 1982-1984 CRFMP activities (Archer et al. 1986).
DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA
The Colorado River Basin is separated (by 1928 compact agreements) into
upper and lower basins near Lee Ferry, Arizona. The upper basin is further
subdivided (Zorns et al. 1965) into three major river systems, or hydrologic
subbasins: Green, upper mainstem Colorado, and San Juan-Colorado (Figure 1).
The Green River Subbasin comprises about I16,D00 k® (45,000 mil) of the
284,000 km2 (109,500 mil) occupied by the upper Colorado River Basin. The
Green River is the largest tributary to the mainstem Colorado River (and lower
Colorado River Basin), and extends about 800 linear kilometers (500 mf) to its
source, the Wind River Range in Wyoming.
Study area includes Green and Yampa rivers (Figure 2). The Green River
study area extends from Echo Park in Dinosaur National Monument, (Rivet Mile
(RM) 345 (River Kilometer (RK) 352)) to the confluence of the Green and
Colorado rivers in Canyonlands National Park (RM 0 (RK 0)).
