Fish culture dominated fishery science in the United States for at
least 50 years. Regarded as a panacea to stop the loss of fisheries, it was
not until t,#~'1930-40 dgca~d'e that research highlighted the need for habitat
protection and management (Radonski and Martin 1981). In the past, fish
culture was not directed at the restoration of endangered fishes; rather, it
was directed at restoring sport fishing. e, here are many research
needs that remain to be answered regarding the use of hatcheries, and stocking
p to ~r t Yv` ,Y+~',~6 r'
in management for recovery.
