DRAFT27
extreme events. This does not mean that extreme events create particularly favorable conditions.
A moderate year, in which peak flows are near average, temperature fluctuaxions are reliable and
habitats are stable, is likely to offer the most favorable conditions for good production and
subsequent recruitment into the following age group. However, the non-natives which have
become so plentiful in the rivers also do well under this circumstance. That Colorado squawfish
are better able to withstand extreme events gives them an advantage in survivorship over the non-
native species in such years, resulting in better overall recruitment. Because these two scenarios
are in conflict, and the effects of flow and extreme events are not well understood for the other
native fish, the best recommendation is to manage the river system as naturally as possible, in
order to take advantage of the positive aspects of both scenarios.
-27-
