16
low in comparison to the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam; a
tailwater trout fishery which receives a great deal of fishing
pressure. A 1992-93 creel survey documented a total of 316,919
angler hours over a 12 month period on 28 miles of river below
the dam. The average fishing trip length was 4-4.5 hours (Roger
Schneidervan, personal communication). This results in an
average of 193 anglers/day for all months, although the actual
numbers are probably higher in the summer than the winter.
However, for this survey, a significant portion of the
fishing pressure may have been under represented or missed
entirely. The Green River survey clerk reported that many,
perhaps most, anglers fished from evening into and sometimes
through the night. Corle (1993), in an informal fishing article,
reports that "most local enthusiasts believe that in summer the
really big cats are more active in the middle of the night" and
that most anglers he interviewed "don't even start fishing until
10 p.m.". These anglers were not well represented in the survey,
being contacted only at the beginning of their trips if at all.
No threatened or endangered species were observed in the
possession of anglers on either river during the survey.
However, on creel survey days a total of four Colorado squawfish
were reported as caught and released on the Green River, and two
on the Colorado River. This results in a total catch rate of
.0036 fish/hour in the Green River, and .0018 fish/hour in the
Colorado River, which is low by any standard.
