14
Colorado squawfish catch
In June, two Colorado squawfish were caught and released on
the Green River by the same angler at RK 508.4, and two in August
at RK 535.1,- also by one angler. On the Colorado River, two
squawfish were caught in June by different anglers, one at RK
75.6 and one at RK 107.8. The squawfish caught near RK 75.6 was
estimated by the angler to be "24 inches" in length (610 mm). No
other lengths were reported.
Anglers also reported catching squawfish on non-survey days.
On the Green River two squawfish were reported caught in July by
an angler, one at RK 508.1 and one at RK 466.3. On the Colorado
River, one "squawfish" approximately "6 inches" was released at
RR 98.1 in May, and two "8 inch" fish at RK 107.8, and a "14
inch" fish at RK 82 were reported released in June. The angler
identification of these fish is suspect. Due to their small size
they could easily have been roundtail chub which were
misidentified as Colorado squawfish. Most anglers stated that
they were aware of the endangered status of the listed species
and informational brochures disseminated by creel clerks were
well received.
The creel clerks reported recognizing many of the anglers
who returned to fish quite often. Only 11% of anglers on the
Green and 14% on the Colorado River were non-Utah residents. Of
non-residents, 88~ fishing the Green and 750 on the Colorado
River were from the state of Colorado.
