3
section and progressed downstream. Interviews were repeated
upstream to the beginning, and sometimes repeated again if time
was sufficient. All counts were made from the road which
parallels the river along most of the length of the section.
The survey was conducted on the Green River from mid-April
to mid-September. From April to July the survey covered River
Kilometer (RK) 513.3 to 478 (River Mile [RM} 319 to 297) (Jensen
area), and counts were made at either 0700 or 1400 hours,
alternating each survey day. Anglers were interviewed after the
0700 count or before the 1400 count. In August the survey was
expanded upstream and downstream to include Island Park (RK 537.4
[RM 334]) and Horseshoe Bend (RK 464.4 [RM 289]). Anglers were
interviewed as they were counted, once at each of three large
general areas that provided good fishing access within the
section (Island Park, Jensen, Horseshoe Bend). The relatively
inaccessible areas between were not surveyed. The counts were
usually made from the road, but the survey of the central area
(Jensen) was often conducted by boat.
During angler interviews, creel clerks collected information
on location of the angler (RK),, number of anglers/site, hours
spent fishing, whether fishing from boat or shore, number of each
fish species caught; released or creeled, gear used, and
residency (state or Utah county) of the angler. Fishing trips
were recorded as either complete or incomplete on the Green
River, but no distinctions were made on the Colorado River.
