1
~~~
1
~i
METHODS
General
Three main objectives guided research efforts. The first objective involved an exhaustive
literature search and review, from which species descriptions were compiled. Documents
from the Colorado State University Larval Fish Laboratory (LFL) and Morgan Library
were examined. Online fisheries and aquatic-literature databases, Internet searches,
perusal of literature-cited sections of materials already gathered, and personal
communications were also used to obtain relevant sources of information.
In objective two, species distributions, population trends, and status were described using
information from collection records, and distribution and abundance data gathered from
museums and state natural resource agencies, regional fish experts, and literature sources.
Maps were created as part of the distribution-description process (see Mapping on
fallowing page). Sources examined that are not presented in the Literature Cited section
are presented in Appendix A. Summaries of species distributions are presented in the
Species Descriptions section. Objective three involved peer review of draft reports and
incorporation of reviewer comments and additional information. A list of reviewers is
presented in Appendix B.
Population Trends and Status Determinations
' Assessment of population trends was difficult considering the paucity of consistently
collected, long-term data sets. Status determinations were also problematic because
1
1
abundance estimates were available for a very small portion of the total habitat used by
the three study species. General basin-wide population trends and status determinations
were inferred from information provided by literature sources and our database collection
records. Percent decline in range was calculated from historical and recent distribution
maps for each of the study species (see following pages for details of mapping and
percern decline calculations).
Final Report September 2002
to
