ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Translating this book from an intriguing idea into reality could
not have been possible without the support and inspiration of
many people. I would like to thank all of the authors who found
time in their already overcrowded schedules to contribute their
ideas, insights, and expertise. They patiently stuck with the
project through many drafts and revised timelines, and their
time and energy has been much appreciated.
I am also grateful to Barbara Dean at Island Press. She sup-
ported this project from the beginning, and her advice and ex-
pertise truly made this book a reality:
Chuck .Ayers deserves special thanks not only for his careful
reading of many of the essays, but also for his untiring encourage-
ment and patience that kept me going throughout the project.
The University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources
provided organizational support for the production of the spe-
cial issue of Endangered Species Update from -which this book
evolved.
Finally, I would like to thank Michael Soule. He reviewed
several of the essays for this volume and, as always, offered
constructive criticism that pushed me to improve my work.
Most important, he served as a model of dedication to the cause
of species conservation, excellent writing, and inspiring think-
ing. He has been a great mentor, and I dediicate this book to him.
