The current status of these native fishes of the American
Southwest can be attributed directly to man's activities (Jensen
__ in Rinne et al. in press). Recovery of these unique fishes now
requires well planned and determined human action. Protection,
habitat preservation and management, research, captive
propagation, reintroduction, and public education are all
essential components of the recovery program. With no evident
recruitment to declining razorback sucker-and bonytail
populations, the long life spans of these species are obviously
all that have saved them from extinction to this date. Many other
species persist precariously in limited habitats. Hopefully, the
described recovery efforts will not only preserve and perpetuate
these species, but will lead to downlisting or delisting through
establishment of expanded or additional self-sustaining
populations.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I express appreciation to the entire staff at Dexter NFH (Roger
Hamman, Troy Winham, Jim Brooks, Joe Owens, Felipe Sosa and Sharon
Coats) for their dedicated efforts in helping carry out this
important program; the consistent team approach has made the
accomplishments of this program both possible and satisfying.
Sharon Coats ably prepared this manuscript. The Arizona Game and
Fish Department is to be commended for its leadership in carrying
out recovery efforts for the State's endangered native fishery
resources.
LITERATURE CITED
Brooks, J.E. 1985.
