Fish sampling for small and young-of-the-year fish raa done by
seining shallow areas is the main river channel and coamccted and iso-
lated backwaters. The seine used for these collections vas a 1/8' mesh
and 15 foot long supported by two, 8 foot long poles. Les~ths of seine
hauls varied depending on substrate conditions and the nvzber of small
fish that were collected. After each haul, all of the small fish were
either field identified or preserved in formaldehyde for identification
under laboratory conditions. All rare or endangered fish seined were
measured to standard length and also, if possible, to total length.
Sabitat measurements were taken of all areas seined as described in the
San Juan River Rare and Endangered Fish Work Statement.
Physical Data Collections
All, apparrent permanent backwaters were identified and mapped
adjacent to the rlverine portions of the river. These backwaters were
described by measuring their lengths, widths, depths, water temperature
and substrate composition. In addition, the main San Joan River chan-
nel vas profiled at several locations by measuring eater depths across
the channel .
Water floe data vas obtained f rom the National Qeather Service
which had compiled data from the U.S.G.S. gaging station at Bluff,
Gtah.
6
