San Jean River
River M31es 5.0-1.0
Physical and Chemical Description
This section of the river is within the cost obvious transition area
between reservoir and river habitat. ?he river flows free of its canyon habi-
tat at appro=iaately river mile 4 at Clay Hills Crossing. Depending on the
reservoir's elevation, this section of the river varies from a well-defined
heavily silted in river channel to a broad, shallow area inundating built up
silt de~sits. Sediment deposits within this area are several feet deep and
V
increase ~ annually,,~~ r , d r~[~Ee. At lower reservoir elevations, the river
chaffiel resembles a canal and offers very little fish habitat. No backwaters
were present during any of the field data collection trips and because of the ~ " Y
s ~ si' o s ~ 'x~
h~h siltat-ien rate, backwater formation is unlikely to occur. accordingly,
no habitat measurements were taken within this section of river. eater quality
conditions were similar to what vas described for the upstream section.
Fisheries
Comparatively, very little effort vas expended in saapling this section of
the river because the habitat present vas not judged to have much potential in
yielding rare fish. Also since the area is a mixture of reservoir and river,
the catch per unit effort should not be compared to the upstream data. The
three times it vas electrofished, the reservoir was at higher elevations
resulting in broad, shallow areas with very little flow. these saaples
yielded high catch rates for two species, carp and channel catfish_
14
