~_ During periods of lover flow (less than 1,500 cfs), several tempo-
rary backwaters are created. These backwaters were the ones sampled
this Pall for youngrof-the-year fisb. It appears creation of these
backwaters are ^ade possible at low floe because of the inf luence of
Lake Powell on the river inducing suspended solids to "fall out" of
suspension and creating an accumulation of sand oo the river bottom.
'this process occurs gradually over several months to forte an uneven
bottom profile that helps in creating backwater habitat. This process
is repeated annually.
Although eater quality measurements were limited to gathering
eater temperature information, a few general observations about water
quality conditions were made. The upstream drainage is highly erosive
and vas reflected in the high rate of sediment deposition. Conductiv-
ity of the water, as indicated by relative electrofishing efficiency,
varied considerbly, but overall appeared to stay high. In general,
poor water quality is a limiting factor to fish species composition.
Fisheries
Fish sampling in this section of river was accomplished primarily
by electrofishing sad seining although a few fish were collected by
entanglesent netting. A summary of the fish collected from
electrofishing from this section of river is presented below.
8
