• Colorado River
CRBR181 N Located just upstream of the Clifton Water Treatment Plan and 34 Road, two adjacent
gravel ponds in the 15-mile reach were investigated (see Figure 8). The furthest upstream pond is the
BR Pond and it provides approximately 8 acres of floodable area. The pond currently holds water year-
round, is used as a recreational area, and is protected from flooding by a man-made levee. The same
levee also protects the BO pit, located downstream of the BR Pond. Gravel operations have just recently
(Spring 1998) been completed and the site has be re-seeded with vegetation. The pit fills by a
groundwater connection to the river, rising and falling as flows in the river increase and decrease.
The BO Pit provides 26 acres of floodable area, but would not connect with the river unless the Colorado
River flows exceeded 40,000 cfs, that is, approximately the 50-year flood. The levee can be notched at
one location to increase flooding frequency to 2 out of 3 years, or even to an annual frequency, similar to
other floodable gravel pits in the vicinity. The BR pit could be flooded in conjunction with the BO pit if the
levee between the two were notched or removed (see Chapter 5 for further discussion).
•
•
1-11
