represents 250 of its original range (Tyus 1y~4). extirpation of
,t the species from Lower Basin rivers coincided with man caused
I
i_
habitat alterations including construction of dams, stream
dewatering, and soil erosion (Miller 1961, Minckley and Deacon
1968}. The Colorado squawfish is listed as endangered by the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service and the state of Colorado, and protected
by the State of Utah (USFWS 1987).
METHODS
Literature was reviewed to identify distribution, habitat use,
and limiting factors of Colorado squawfish. Colorado squawfish
activity areas were defined and recommended for mapping from this
review. Enclosed is a narrative scenario that identifies activity
areas for each river in Colorado that contain Colorado squawfish.
The draft of this report was reviewed by biologists familiar with
the species;-the final-version reflects their comments and
suggestions, and was approved by the CDOW Northwest Regional
Management Team.
RESULTS
Changes in abundance and distribution
The original range of Colorado squawfish extended throughout
the Colorado Basin from Wyoming to the Gulf of California in Mexico
*As per the Colorado Contract of 1928, the Colorado Basin is divided
into Upper and Lower Basins at Lee Ferry, AZ (Carlson and Carlson
1982).
3
