represents 250 of its original range (Tyus 1y~4). extirpation of <br />,t the species from Lower Basin rivers coincided with man caused <br />I <br />i_ <br />habitat alterations including construction of dams, stream <br />dewatering, and soil erosion (Miller 1961, Minckley and Deacon <br />1968}. The Colorado squawfish is listed as endangered by the U.S. <br />Fish and Wildlife Service and the state of Colorado, and protected <br />by the State of Utah (USFWS 1987). <br />METHODS <br />Literature was reviewed to identify distribution, habitat use, <br />and limiting factors of Colorado squawfish. Colorado squawfish <br />activity areas were defined and recommended for mapping from this <br />review. Enclosed is a narrative scenario that identifies activity <br />areas for each river in Colorado that contain Colorado squawfish. <br />The draft of this report was reviewed by biologists familiar with <br />the species;-the final-version reflects their comments and <br />suggestions, and was approved by the CDOW Northwest Regional <br />Management Team. <br />RESULTS <br />Changes in abundance and distribution <br />The original range of Colorado squawfish extended throughout <br />the Colorado Basin from Wyoming to the Gulf of California in Mexico <br />*As per the Colorado Contract of 1928, the Colorado Basin is divided <br />into Upper and Lower Basins at Lee Ferry, AZ (Carlson and Carlson <br />1982). <br />3 <br />
