conversation with Darrel Snyder - LFL). Flows were on the ascending limb of the hydrograph at
1160 cfs and main channel temperatures were 15 °C. Other native species collected in light traps
included one chub, 50 flannelmouth suckers, and 274 speckled dace (Table 19). In addition 37
unidentified suckers were captured. Nonnative species captured included fathead minnows (n =
320), red shiners (n = 1722), sand shiners (n = 656), green sunfish (n = 6), white suckers (n = 8)
and unidentified minnows (n = 24).
Drift nets. In 1997, larval native fish collected include: 5 speckled dace, 3 flannelmouth
sucker, and 1 bluehead sucker (Tables 9 and 11 }. Flannelmouth sucker larvae were collected at
RM 10.2 and 11.2 on 26 June and 19 June respectively; speckled dace larvae were collected at
RM 12.8 on 10 July, and bluehead sucker were collected at RM 11.4 on 25 June.
Nonnative species collected include: 4.7% red shiner, 9.6% fathead minnow, 5.9% sand
shiner, 0.7% smallmouth bass, and 0.7% possible white sucker / flannelmouth sucker hybrid
(Table 4d). NNC's too small or damaged to identify individual species accounted for 27.4% of
the drift net collections.
The entire 1997 drift net collection was composed of 93% minnow species, 4% sucker, <
1 % non-cypriniform species, and 1.5% were unidentified due to small size and/or damaged
condition.
In 1998, 27 drift net samples were collected from 27 May to 22 July. High flows and
high quantities of drifting debris made it difficult to sample effectively using drift nets. As a
result, fewer samples were collected using drift nets in 1998, and from these, 24 red shiners and 3
fathead minnows were collected from one set made at RM 6.6 (Pipeline) on 22 July (Table 19).
Seine samples. Seine samples (n = 36) were collected from RM 1.4 near the confluence
with the Green River to RM 14.3 near the confluence of the Uinta River. These samples
included the following native species: one chub, 19 flannelmouth suckers and 23 speckled dace.
Nonnative species included black bullhead catfish, carp, fathead minnows, green sunfish, red
shiners, sand shiners, smallmouth bass and white suckers (Table 19}.
Post-larval Sampling
Native species collected in 1997 include: 138 speckled dace, 23 flannelmouth sucker, 35
roundtail chub, and 2 bluehead sucker (Table 17). All but seven speckled dace were caught
within the uppermost section (Myton; Tables 14-16). Flannelmouth sucker were caught in all
sections, with over 50% being captured in the Myton section;. however, only one was caught
during the last trip. It was also in the Myton section. Chubs were only caught during the second
and third sampling trips. Most (63%) were caught within the Uinta section, one in the Ouray,
and 12 in the Myton section.
Non-native species accounted for over 99% of all fish collected (Table 17).
