4
document) are very expensive for the CDOW to maintain.
•
Angler satisfaction in the Northwest Region cannot be maintained by stocking
trout alone. Many anglers prefer to catch and eat warmwater fish. The demand for
~ warmwater sportfishing is expected to grow as the population in the Region increases,
and particularly as more people move into the area from other parts of the country
where warmwater fish provide most sportfishing opportunities. Surveys show that
~ in 1991 an estimated 10,000 to 13,000 anglers fished approximately 66,000 days
for warmwater fish species in the Northwest Region. The stockings proposed in this
document would be done to improve management of sportfisheries. All sportfish
• species proposed for stocking currently exist in northwestern Colorado and are
currently present in some of the waters being considered. No new fish species are
proposed for introduction to the Colorado River drainage basin.
•
Freauency of Flooding in the Floodolain
All gravel pit ponds proposed for stocking in this document lie in the floodplain
~ of the Colorado River. The Interim Procedures state that floodplain ponds should not
be stocked where the frequency of flooding is greater than once every 40 years.
The most recent high runoff years were 1983, 7 984, and 1993. For runoff
~ levels in the Colorado River, 1983 was a 60-100 year event, 1984 was a 50-75 year
event, and 1993 was a 7 0-20 year event (Ed Vail, USGS, personal communication,
1994). All ponds proposed for stocking in this document are believed to be above the
~ 40-year floodplain. Maps that delineate the 40-year floodplain will not be available
C
