s
38
ISLAND ACRES POND
• I. Introduction
A. Physical parameters
1. Management category - #230 (Warmwater lakes < 100 ac)
A 2. Drainage -Colorado River
3. Size - 1 surface acre
4. Location - 3 miles northeast of Palisade
T10S, R98W, Sec. 26
5. Elevation - 4,758 feet
6. Maximum depth - 8 feet
7. Dike description -Pond lies on the inside of a gradual bend in the river,
so erosional forces are directed against the opposite bank. the berm is
natural cobble alluvium.
B. Physical Description: Island Acres lake is the oldest of four gravel pit
ponds that lie in the floodplain of the Colorado River. All four ponds are
~ part of the Colorado State Parks system.
C. Existing fish community -Rainbow trout, black bullhead, green sunfish,
white sucker, and carp present in 1993.
II. Management strategy

A. Manage as a mixed species recreational fishery for largemouth bass and
bluegill.
B. Special regulations should be adopted for providing a quality fishery for
largemouth bass 12 fish > 15") and to extend the annual yield of bluegill
~ (10 fish bag).
III. Stocking purpose and need
A. Rationale/Justification for selecting the species
~ 1. Rainbow trout stocking has been moved to one of the larger ponds in
the park. Water quality and temperatures are not suitable for holding
trout in Island Acres lake except in early spring or late fall. Lake is
warmwater fish habitat and managing for warmwater sportfish will
provide a year round fishery.
2. Increase fishing opportunity (Long Range Plan Goals 12, 12.1, 12.3).
• 3. Largemouth bass and bluegill do not persist in the Colorado River
which will minimize impacts to recovery of endangered Colorado River
fishes if bass and bluegill escape to the river.
