34
HIGHLINE RESERVOIR
~ I. Introduction
A. Physical parameters
1. Management category - #231 (Warmwater lakes 100-500 ac)
~ 2. Drainage -Mack Wash, Salt Creek, Colorado River
3. Size - 135 surface acres
4. Location - 9 miles NW of Fruita; T2N, R3W, Sec. 5
5. Elevation - 4,700 feet
6. Maximum depth - 62 feet
7. Inlet information -The major source of water is from the Highline ditch.
B. Highline Reservoir is situated on Mack Wash. Water for filling the reservoir
comes from surplus spillage from the Highline Irrigation Canal. Spillage
occurs during the irrigation season, approximately April through October.
This reservoir is part of the Colorado State Parks system.
•
C. Existing fish community -Largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie,
bluegill, green sunfish, channel catfish, white suckers, common carp and
flannelmouth suckers were present in 1993. Bluegill, crappie, perch, and
green sunfish populations appear stunted. Flannelmouth sucker are rare.
All fish species are reproducing naturally since no fish are being stocked.
•
II. Management strategy
A. Create a sportfishery in Highline Reservoir. Currently fishing is poor for all
species.
~ B. Manage as a mixed species recreational fishery for warmwater fish
species. Improve channel catfish fishing by stocking catfish. Catfish
fishing used to be good.
C. Introduce walleye to manage the large populations of white suckers, carp,
~ and stunted panfish. Walleye would also create a specialized and unique
fishery for the Grand Junction area.
D. Special regulations for largemouth bass (fish > 15").
Ill. Stocking purpose and need
•
A. Rationale/Justification for selecting the species
•
