1993 Kenney Res. Channel Catfish Study Report ~~
Page 14
used to reduce the amount of time spent removing
entangled carp.
3) Habitat typing will continue but is intended to be used
by the fisheries workers to insure that gill/trammel nets
are set in a variety of areas. It will not be used to
evaluate catfish habitat preferences because many of the
habitat characteristics are ambiguously defined and do
not necessarily describe the actual underwater habitat
from which a catfish was sampled.. Much of the sampling
effort in 1994 will be directed at the same areas in the
upper half of the reservoir which were most productive in
1993.
4) Continue to mark all fishes captured during sampling.
Catfish should be marked with Floy tags if longer than 10
inches, otherwise given spine clips. All catfish will be
measured to total length and weighed. All other fishes
will be marked with a caudal fin punch hole.
River:
5) Continue sampling in both upper and lower reaches of the
White River. Electrofish both river banks and use baited
hoop nets in each reach during June when the river should
still be navigable with runoff water.. Use baited hoop
nets again in both reaches in August/September.
6) Continue to experimerft with bait for hoop nets. Shrimp
_ worked well_in September 1993, but are expensive. Try
commercially marketed cheese trimmings catfish bait.
7) Continue to weigh, measure to total length, and mark all
channel catfish. ~ Catfish less than- I2 inches total,
length will be marked with caudal fin punch hole.
Catfish greater than 12 inches total length with be
marked with an individually numbered Floy tag.
