WASTEFUL WATER PRACTICES <br />NPCA RECOMMENDATIONS: Federal and state programs should be established that provide incentives <br />for, or compel the adoption of, water conservation measures where existing or potential demand for <br />water threatens national park,resources. <br />Congress Should: <br />1. Enact legislation to provide incentives-for,, or compel adoption of; water conservation or reallocation <br />measures in water-short areas where existing or potential demand for water threatens, park resources. <br />Incentives could include tax credits ancVOr matching funds foi the implementation of effective water con- <br />,: nervation measures. <br />2. Initiate programs to discourage or prohibit the "mining" of ground water resources-from aquifers <br />which supply water to parks. <br />The Parh Service Should: <br />3. Implement interpretative programs to educate the public about the need to adopt water conservation <br />measures in order to avoid serious-damage -to our~national parks and~the largex environment: <br />4. Expand water conservation measures within national parks, especially in desert regions, to control <br />bath Park Service and public use of water. <br />33 <br />
