THREATS TO PARK WATERS
SUMMARY OF MAJOR THREATS
TO PARK WATERS
THREATS TO WATER QUANTITY
^ Dams and diversions to serve municipal, hydropower, irrigation, industrial, flood control,
recreational and other purposes.
^ Production of hydro-electric power, especially peaking power, at existing dams upstream,
downstream and within our parks.
^ Ground water pumping of aquifers that sustain park springs, seeps, wetlands, geothermal
resources and feed streams and other water bodies in our parks.
THREATS TO PARK WATER QUALITY
^ Pollution from active and abandoned landfills, toxic dumps, inadequate septic and waste
water disposal systems, underground storage tanks and a host of other sources.
^ Contaminated runoff from agricultural, ranching, urban, residential areas.
^ Heavy metals, acids and other hazardous chemical substances from abandoned mining and
drilling sites.
^ Existing mines, potential development of mining claims and oil and gas drilling.
^ Accidental and sometimes deliberate spills from the storage, transportation or use of chemi-
cals, oil and other fuels.
^ Offshore oil exploration, drilling and transportation.
^ Runoff and deposition of sediment from surface-disturbing activities on park watersheds.
^ Acid deposition from the emission of acid-forming chemicals from fossil fuel burning power
plants and other industrial facilities.
4
