THREATS TO PARK WATERS <br />SUMMARY OF MAJOR THREATS <br />TO PARK WATERS <br />THREATS TO WATER QUANTITY <br />^ Dams and diversions to serve municipal, hydropower, irrigation, industrial, flood control, <br />recreational and other purposes. <br />^ Production of hydro-electric power, especially peaking power, at existing dams upstream, <br />downstream and within our parks. <br />^ Ground water pumping of aquifers that sustain park springs, seeps, wetlands, geothermal <br />resources and feed streams and other water bodies in our parks. <br />THREATS TO PARK WATER QUALITY <br />^ Pollution from active and abandoned landfills, toxic dumps, inadequate septic and waste <br />water disposal systems, underground storage tanks and a host of other sources. <br />^ Contaminated runoff from agricultural, ranching, urban, residential areas. <br />^ Heavy metals, acids and other hazardous chemical substances from abandoned mining and <br />drilling sites. <br />^ Existing mines, potential development of mining claims and oil and gas drilling. <br />^ Accidental and sometimes deliberate spills from the storage, transportation or use of chemi- <br />cals, oil and other fuels. <br />^ Offshore oil exploration, drilling and transportation. <br />^ Runoff and deposition of sediment from surface-disturbing activities on park watersheds. <br />^ Acid deposition from the emission of acid-forming chemicals from fossil fuel burning power <br />plants and other industrial facilities. <br />4 <br />
