In the process of
digging up the stream beds, they destroyed large salmon runs in Sierra Nevada foothill
streams and turned shady pool-and-riffle trout streams into long, shallow, exposed
runs. Many of these streams are still nearly barren of fish. Today the straightening and
dredging. of stream channels is being carried out in the name of flood control by
agencies like the Soil Conservation Service. Channelized sections of Rush Creek,
Modoc County, when compared to nonchannelized sections, contain fewer fish overall,
much smaller trout, and fewer of.the rare Modoc sucke r.
