Because <br />bonytails from the lower Colorado basin cannot <br />be aged reliably by scale methods, identification <br />of these last individuals as either wild or hatchery- <br />produced is not possible unless they are killed. <br />However, otoliths of four of the five 1988 speci- <br />mens that died had six apparent annuli; therefore, <br />these fish most likely represent F, fish stocked in <br />1981. The other 1988 specimen was estimated to <br />be at least ! 0 years old. One of the three fish from <br />1986 was older than 20 years; otoliths of the other <br />two specimens were not examined.
