All pumping plants are similar
in design and operation. Forebays are triangular,
having a maximum width of 100 m and depths of
10.7 m. Lake Pleasant was designed as an off-site
storage reservoir and is located north of Phoenix,
between the Hassayampa and Salt-Gila pumping
plants. Completion of pumping facilities at Lake
Pleasant and subsequent water storage and deliv-
eries did not occur until 1995. The canal is fenced
and closed to fishing to the general public.
Methods
Sampling started in Reach 1 and progressed
downstream as construction was finished and ad-
ditional portions of the canal were put into service.
Water volume gradually increased over the years
and was 1.3 X 108 m3 in 1986, 3.9 X 108 m3 in
1987, 5.0 X 108 m3 in 1988, and 9.4 X 108 m3 in
1989.
Water quality.-Dissolved oxygen, pH, conduc-
tivity, and water temperature data were collected
during sampling trips by using a HydroLab Sur-
veyor, series 4000, water quality analyzer. Mea-
surements were taken at 1-m-depth intervals at
dusk and dawn to determine the daily range of
water quality characteristics.
Ichthyoplankton.-Ichthyoplankton samples were
collected with a bongo frame rigged with two, 0.5-
m-diameter, 330-µm-mesh plankton nets fitted
with individual flow meters to measure sample vol-
ume. The apparatus was weighted and fished in
the discharge plume of four pumping plants. Sam-
ples were preserved in a 5% formalin solution for
later analyses.
Samples were collected April-June, when
young fish were thought to be most vulnerable to
transport. During 1987, collections were taken at
the Lake Havasu Pumping Plant, which is the point
of diversion, and downstream at the Bouse Hills
Pumping Plant (27 km) on a random (24-h) sched-
ule. Investigations were expanded further down-
