Vladimirov
(December 19, 1911-March 151 1976)
Soviet ichthyology has suffered a heavy
loss. On March 15, 1976 at the height of
his creative powers, one of the greatest
ichthyologists of the country, Doctor of
Biological Sciences, Professor Vladimir
Ivanovich Vladimirov died suddenly.
V. I. Vladimirov was born on December
19, 1911 in Bobruysk. All his 45 years of
scientific and public activity were closely
linked with ichthyology and fisheries. His
inclination for scientific work and his out-
standing abilities were evident during his
student years, when he studied at Perm
University and at the same time worked in
the Laboratory of the Scientific Research
Biological Institute of that university.
While still a student he participated in two
major fisheries expeditions, the Irtysb ex-
pedition (1932-1933) and the Novaya Zemlya
expedition (1935). His first scientific work,
"On the biology of the cod in Novaya Zemlya"
was published from data collected during
the Novaya Zemlya expedition.
In 1936 on completing his university
training, Vladimirov began work in the
Sevan Hydrobiological Station in Armenia,
where he engaged in scientific research
work until 1946. In the early years of his
work he studied and described the "Lake
Sevan khramulya" and subsequently his
scientific interest was concentrated on in-
vestigations of the trout of Lake Sevan and
Transcaucasia as a whole. So thorough
was his study of the reproductive biology,
the intraspecific differentiation, stocks and
fishing of the Sevan trout that his work may
quite justifiably take its place among the
classics. He also made a great contribution
to the study of the systematics and origin
of the trout of Transcaucasia, and in par-
ticular he described a new Pliocene species
of trout. The result of his Sevan period of
work was 11 scientific works, a candida-
ture thesis, "The Sevan khramulya" defend-
ed by him in 1940 and a thesis for the degree
of doctor, "The trout of Armenia" which he
successfully defended in 1945. Unfortu-
nately, because of the difficulties of the
post-war period, the latter was not published
in the form of a monograph.
In 1946 Vladimirov transferred to the
Institute for Hydrobiology of the Ukrainian
SSR Academy of Sciences, where he worked
until his death. From 1948 to 1972 he headed
the Department of Ichthyology to which the
former Department of Experimental Fish
Ecology was added in 1965, and in July 1972
he became scientific consultant to.the Depart-
ment of Ichthyology.
The scientific activity of Vladimirov in the
Institute of Hydrobiology of the Ukrainian
SSR Academy of Sciences was varied and
fruitful. Between 1948 and 1950 extensive
studies of fishes in the Soviet section of the
Danube were carried out under his direction
and with his participation, special attention
being paid to the Danube shad. The conditions
of its reproduction, the biology of the larvae
and mortality factors of the early stages of
development were studied. Methods of count-
ing drifting larvae, and recommendations
to fisheries organizations aimed at increas-
ing herring catches were worked out. A
monographic description of the Danube shad,
produced under the direction of Vladimirov
in the Proceedings of the Institute of Hydro-
biology of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences
(No. 28 in 1953) received recognition in the
scientific community and among practical
workers in the fishing industry.
in 1951 Vladimirov organized and led
research into the biology of fish and fishing
stocks of the Lower Dnieper and the Dnieper
estuary, in connection with the construction
of the Kakhov hydroengineering installation.
He described in detail the places and the
conditions of reproduction of the diadromous
Dnieper sturgeon, herrings, vimba.and other
fishes, and he worked out a forecast of the
changes in reproductive conditions and abun-
dance of diadromous and semi-diadromous
species of fish following the construction of
Kakhov dam, and also in connection with dif-
ferent versions of the damming of the
Dnieper-Bug estuary.
