Approximately I mile past the town of Basalt turn right and cross
the bridge over the Roaring Fork River.

Goals: Creation of a native trout stream including nursery and
spawning habitat and adjacent wetland and riparian habitat.

Methods: A 25-foot wide, one-mile long trout stream was created
ti'om a historic side channel of the Roaring Fork River. Several structures were
constructed within the stream to replicate a natural trout stream system.
Treatments included vortex rock weirs, boulder arches, a mid-channel bar, con-
cave bend pools, spawning habitat, a false log jam, cover logs and Montana rif-
tles. Native wetland and riparian species were contract grown by Aquatic &
Wetland Company. Plant material consisted of over 17,000 willow cuttings (live
stakes) and 50,000 sedges, rushes, shrubs and trees (17 species). Plant material
was used to replicate the natural plant communities within a riparian ecosystem
including a wetland ti'inge, facultative riparian zone, and a riparian/overstory.
Additionally, a side channel, tlow-through wetland complex and several different
backwater complexes were created in critical locations.

Results: The newly created stream, riparian and wetland corridor
offers superb small stream trout fishing, hiking, birding, and educational opportu-
nities and makes an outstanding visual statement. The project exemplifies a state
of the art accomplishment by a multidisciplinary approach to habitat creation,
restoration and re-naturalization.

38

Driving Guide .
