(303) 963,1356

Restoration
Objectives:

Mitigation of disturbed wetlands

Description: Mitigation was completed as a condition of a section 404 per-
mit issued by the Corps of Engineers to onset the disturbance of .255 acre of irri-
gated wetlands impacted during construction of a water ski lake.

Directions: From EI Jebel. travel southeast one-quarter mile on Highway 82
to the property. Look for the Kodiak Lake sign on the left side of the highway.

Goals: Wildlife and waterfowl habitat improvement in Kodiak
Wetlands including transplanting wetland vegetation. construction of four water-
fowl nesting islands. and the creation of Pinyon Pond. which contains two nesting
islands, two shallow wetland benches, and aeration for open water in winter.

Methods: The lake is approximately 15 surface acres in extent. averaging
6 leet in depth, with a dike separating it from the wildli Ie improvement area. The
ski lake contains two islands for wave dissipation in the turnaround areas at each
end of the lake. Wetland vegetation was transplanted to an adjacent area that is
now called Kodiak Wetlands. Four nesting islands were constructed resulting in 4
to 7 acres of standing water with a maximum depth of 3 to 4 leet in which exist-
ing wetland vegetation could expand. Cottonwoods, aspen, buffalo beny, and
spruce were planted around the lake and on the islands. Disturbed sites were
seeded with perennial grasses and irrigated. Additionally, a one-acre pond was
constructed with two nesting islands and two shallow benches for planting emer-
gent wetlands. The benches were planted with transplanted cattails, hardstem bul-
rush, sedge species, reed canary grass, and rush species. An aeration system was
installed to maintain open water during the winter for waterfowl. To encourage
waterfowl nesting on the islands, willow stakes were planted in the Kodiak
Wetlands.

Results: All work has been completed on the 3 locations; Kodiak Ski
Lake, Kodiak Wetlands, and Pinyon Pone!. Wetland habitat had not developed
during the spring or late fall prior to completion of this project. In the spring 101-
lowing construction there was open water in late March lor nesting birds, and

36 Driving Guide . Colorado Watershed --
