.,
I

Location: Located along the northwest side of the N0I1h Fork of the
Snake River in the heart of River Run Village, Keystone
Resort.

Land Owner: Keystone Real Estate Developments
P. O. Box 8875
Keystone, CO 80435
Phone: Thomas Davidson (970) 496-7120

Directions: Take 1-70 west. Exit Silverthorne. Follow signs to Keystone.
Park in the skier lots. Walk into the village to the pedestrian bridge over the
North Fork, look lell and right.

Goals: I) Water Quality Management to control storm water that is fed
to these wetlands from the skier parking lots and core village areas. 2) Habitat
Restoration. 3) Environmental Education.

Methods: Vegetation was removed from a remnant irrigation ditch and
relocated to a corridor along the North Fork of the Snake River. Willow shrubs
and alder trees from the ditch were planted in the wetland restoration area
adjacent to the North Fork of the Snake River. Three distinct wetland areas were
created adjacent to, and parallel with the river. One area was planted with wil-
lows and alders, the other two were planted with sedge and rush species with a
willow fringe. The plantings were situated next to a pre-existing lodgepole pine
forest. Currently, interpretative signs describing the vegetative communities and
local wildlife are being designed for the wetland. This project was designed by
Dr. Erik Olgierson, Wetland Ecologist.

Results: Relocating the vegetation closer to the river resulted in an
expanded wildlife corridor and enhanced the value of the ecotone. The density
and diversity of the planted vegetation has increased significantly and numerous
volunteer plants have established at the site. The willows and alders have migrat-
ed into the pine forest and created a diversity of habitat community types. Since
the vegetation has matured, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of
birds utilizing the area. Fox sightings are not uncommon and there is evidence
that beaver are moving back into the area. Once completed, the interpretative
signs will be installed along the perimeter of the wetland area for the educational
benefit of the community.

32

Driving Guide ' Colorado Watershed
