. 11mlm

Location: Located directly south of the stoplight at Keystone resort.

Land Owner: Keystone Real Estate Developments
P.O. Box 8875
Keystone. CO 80435
Phone: Thomas Davidson (970) 496- 7120

Directions: Take 1-70 west. Exit Silverthorne. Follow signs to Keystone.
Turn south off Highway 6 at the stoplight. Park by the Condo Registration Desk,
follow the pathway down to wetlands.

Goals: I) Water Quality Management; storm water is fed to these wet-
lands from thc skier parking lots and core village areas. 2) Habitat Restoration.
3) Environmental Education

Methods: Water was captured from the Snake River and diverted into the
wetland restoration area. Approximately two acres were planted with a combina-
tion of alder trees, willow shrubs, sedges and rushes. A pre-existing asphalt bike
path that ran through the middle of the wetland area was re-routed. A new and
elevated bike path was created along the far side of the wetland habitat. The
asphalt was removed from the old bike path and replaced by a narrow, dirt foot-
path for use by pcople and wildlife. Currently, interpretative signs describing the
vegetative communities and local wildlife are being designed for the wetland.
This project was designed by Dr. Erik Olgierson, Wetland Ecologist.

Results: By redirecting flows from the Snake River through the restora-
tion area, a source of sustainaQle hydrology was created for the establishing wet-
land vegetation. Moving and narrowing the bike path and removing the asphalt
has created a more natural environment and provided a more protected wildlifc
corridor through the wetland. Once completed, the educational signs will be
installed along the bike path and perimeter of the wetland area for the educational
bcnefit of the community. The density and diversity of the planted vegetation has
increased significantly. The dcvelopment of the vegetation has resulted in
cnhanced wildlife habitat, ancI there has been a noticeable increase in the number
of waterfowl, beaver and muskrat using the site.

30 Driving Guide .
