Methods: Best Management Practices are being implemented by CDOT
to capture sand and stabilize the eroded banks through revegetation. Federal high-
way funds are currently being used to stabilize slopes and to install sediment
ponds along the drainage. Concrete check dams have been constructed to provide
a stronger and more resistant method of capturing runotf under the adverse envi-
ronmental conditions existing in this area.

Results: The check dams have been successful in filtering much of the
sand and highway runoff before it can reach the creek. As the result of funding
from a 319 Grant and other projects initiated as part of an overall watershed
effort to address sediment loading in Straight Creek, it is likely that these etforts
will lead to improved water quality. As the stream banks continue to stabilize,
and sediment loading is reduced, downstream water quality should continue to
Improve.

Sedimentation Pond

Driving Guide .
