Aquatic wildlife is defined as fish, herptiles, mollusks, and crustaceans. The objectives of this plan are to:
* describe the physical fishery and aquatic resources in the basin subject to management by the Division.
* discuss policies, agreements, and issues which are influencing the management of these resources.
* discuss fishery management for specific waters and aquatic wildlife species located within the basin via management
categories.
* describe preferred fishery and conservation management recommendations for the basin and activities which are being, or will
be, undertaken to achieve agency goals and agreements.
* provide a reference and guide for fishery recreation management and aquatic resource conservation by Division of Wildlife
biologists, federal and state resource managers, and interested public and private agencies and individuals.
Introduction
The Yampa River Basin is located in the northwest corner of Colorado and its drainage area includes 9,530 mil, of which
29% is included in southwestern Wyoming. For the purposes of this plan, the Vermillion, Upper Green, and Lower Green
hydrographic drainages in the northwest corner of Colorado are included. The basin is bounded by the Continental Divide on the
east and the White River Basin on the south. State borders define the north and west boundaries for management purposes. The
Yampa River originates near Yampa Colorado at the confluence of the Bear River, which flows out northeast out of the Flattops
Wilderness with Chimney Creek, which flows northwest from the Gore Range through Egeria Park.
Within Colorado, the Yampa basin may be further delineated into three major hydrographic regions: the Upper Yampa, Lower
Yampa (including the Vermillion and Green river drainages), and Little Snake River drainages. The Upper Yampa River drainage
DRAFT - January 13, 1998
