Vermillion Creek and Green River
Hydrounits: (Appendix C-Table 13)
The Vermillion Creek hydrounit borders the western
edge of the Lower Little Snake River drainage and is
comprised exclusively of small and ephemeral streams and
gulches managed for the conservation of native aquatic wildlife
Talamantes Creek (WC #22296) in the northwestern part of the
drainage may continue to support a wild trout population and
should be evaluated as potential habitat for Colorado River
cutthroat trout. Few of the streams in this drainage can
support fish populations. The Upper Green River hydrounit
features the 40 mi reach of the mainstem Green River that
occurs within Colorado in Dinosaur National Monument and
six lakes or reservoirs (296 ac) in Browns Park National
Wildlife Refuge. While the Green River upstream of this
reach is noted for its high quality tailrace trout fishery below
Flaming Gorge Dam and the benefits of this trout fishery likely
extend to some degree into Colorado, the primary management
purpose of the Green River and the standing water habitats
within Colorado on these federal lands is the conservation of
the native fish and aquatic wildlife community and the recovery
of endangered Colorado River fishes. Beaver (WC #19124),
2 Bar (WC #19025), and Skeltcher (WC #23486) creeks in the
northwest corner of the state within the Upper Green River
drainage are targeted for management and restoration of 15
miles of stream habitat for Colorado River cutthroat trout.
Within the remaining 61 stream reaches and 400 miles of
stream habitat in the Vermillion and Green River hydrounits,
about 19 reaches covering 162 miles may support native fishes.
DRAFT - January 13, 1998
Warmwater streams
::':•:::::`.?
