1. Upper Little Snake River
This drainage includes the mainstem of the Little Snake
River as well as the north, middle, and south forks, and
associated tributaries located within Colorado upstream of the
confluence of Slater Creek. The waters within this drainage
include only 3 lakes (29.2 ac) and 38 streams (178 mi).
Sixteen stream reaches (94 mi) are managed as wild trout
fisheries. Eight streams (34 mi) are targeted for management
and restoration of habitat for Colorado River cutthroat trout.
These include Lopez (WC #21082), Oliver (WC #24092), the
East Fork of Oliver (WC #22719), Johnson (WC #20802), and
Burton (WC #24080) creeks; and the North Fork (WC #22020)
and the South Forks (reaches #1 and #2) of the Little Snake
River (WC #22032 and 23470). Two ponds (9 ac) located on
BLM lands and 13 stream reaches (37 mi) are managed under
Category 320/321 for the conservation of other native aquatic
wildlife. Many of these streams and gulches are small or
seasonal in nature with regard to flow. All waters within this
drainage have been classified as protected habitat with respect
to whirling disease (WD) and can be stocked if necessary with
WD negative fish only. (Appendix C-Table 8)
Recommended management strategies/options:
1) Maintain existing waters designated within Optimum
and Special Management categories as listed.
2) Manage the three reaches of North and South Forks of
the Little Snake River and five associated tributaries
(Oliver Creek drainage, Johnson, Lopez, Burton
creeks) for Colorado River cutthroat trout.
3) Assess any of the streams included in Category 221 for
potential as Colorado River cutthroat trout habitats and
initiate restoration actions as feasible.
4) Inventory alpine amphibian habitats above 7,000 ft
elevation for boreal toad breeding and nursery sites.
5) Initiate baseline herptile, mollusk and crustacean
inventories as agency resources permit.
Native/Unigi
Priv<
Figure 13.
DRAFT - January 13, 1998
LAKES I STREAMS
nique Species
,olorado River
cutthroat trout
trout
Aquatic wildlife management by category in the
Upper Little Snake River drainage.
25
M = r W M= M M M M!
