1. Upper Yampa River STREAMS Put-and-grow
Coldwater streams
This drainage is located south of Steamboat Springs and
includes the mainstem Yampa River and tributaries upstream
of the Elk River confluence. The waters within this drainage
include 61 lakes (2,315 ac) and 94 streams (530 mi). Ten
lakes (1,005 ac) and five streams (82 mi) are included under
intensive management as stocked trout fisheries and include the
mainstem Yampa River between the Elk River and Bear River
confluences, the lower Bear River, Oak Creek; and Stagecoach
Reservoir, Yamcolo Reservoir, Bear Lake, Gardner Park
Reservoir, and Chapman Reservoir among the larger standing
waters. Thirty-six (36) high lakes (335 ac), three coldwater
reservoirs (237 ac), and seven stream reaches (49 mi) are
currently managed as put-and-grow and natural recruitment
fisheries within the Optimum Management categories. Wild
trout fisheries are managed for in 76 stream reaches covering
376 mi. Crosho Lake is managed as a native/unique species
fishery under the special management category. Six stream
reaches totaling 24 mi are managed for conservation of other
native aquatic wildlife. In the non-managed categories, 11
lakes and reservoirs containing 681 surface acres are located on
private land. Almost all waters within this drainage have been
classified as protected habitat with respect to whirling disease
(WD) and can be stocked if necessary with WD negative fish
only. Only four private lakes, the Finger Rock State Fish
Rearing Unit settling pond, and the Yampa River between the
Elk River confluence and Catamount Lake are WD +, and are
permitted under policy to receive WD positive stocked fish.
Boreal toads have been documented to occur in the Soda Creek
drainage (WC #22070, 23456, 26561).
