<br />possible to severely damage some wet- <br />land ecosystems by this technique. <br />Before you do any burning you should <br />check local laws to determine if a permit <br />is required. <br />Mowing is sometimes used to open <br />dense stands of wetlands vegetation. This <br />may be done to attract wildlife or to pro- <br />vide more variety in habitat types. Under <br />some conditions herbicides may also be <br />used, but such use is not recommended. <br />The techniques used in wetlands <br />management often have two sides. Used <br />in moderation and with common sense <br />they can provide significant benefits, but <br />used improperly they can be destructive <br />to the values you are trying to enhance. <br /> <br />In many cases, the best management <br />may be no management at all. Simple <br />protection from grazing animals and <br />excessive human use will allow some wet- <br />lands to remain in a natural, productive <br />condition. If you are happy with your wet- <br />land area, don't make any drastic <br />changes without seeking professional <br />advice, so you don't accidentally destroy <br />what you already have. <br /> <br /> <br />23 <br />
