Protecting Western Colorado Water Since 1937

Consider the Source.

The Colorado River District built
Wolford Mountain Reservoir in
Grand County in 1995. The 66,000
acre-foot reservoir emerged through
cooperative efforts involving the
Northern Colorado Water Conser-
vancy District and Denver Water.

The Colorado River District, with its
partners that include the City of
Craig, the Craig Coal-Fired Power
Plant and the Upper Colorado
Endangered Fish Recovery
Program, is enlarging Elkhead
Reservoir in Northwest Colorado.

What do we do? Founded in 1937, the
Colorado River Water Conservation
District is a local government water policy
agency established "for the conservation,
use and development of the water resources
of the Colorado River and its principal
tributaries. "

The Colorado River District represents
Western Colorado in negotiations with
private, state and federal agencies on
issues involving the development and
protection of the water resources of the
Colorado River Basin. Our mission includes
educating the public of the value of water
and the importance of water issues.

Who do we serve? The Colorado River
District serves 15 Western Colorado
counties. The District covers 28% of the
surface area of the state of Colorado
representing approximately 500,000 people.
Each member county's Board of County
Commissioners appoints one representative
to sit on the Colorado River District Board of
Directors.
