INTRODUCTION

The informa tion presented in this report was collected under provisions
of a 1982 MemorandlD of Understanding between the Fish and Wildlife
Service (FWS) and the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), These studies 83p&Rtied-
expands upon the results of earlier investigations conducted under a
similar agreement from 1979 through 1981.

Work under this MOU was also expanded by mutual agreemen.t during 1984 to
provide for the FWS staff working under this program to participate in a
special multi-agency effort, the Upper Colorado River Coordinating
Committee (UCRCC), to establish criteria and programs for the preserva-
tion of the endangered mainstem Colorado River fishes in the Upper
Basin. An initial phase of that activity was the designation of sensi-
tive river reaches which were deemed especially important to these
endangered fishes.

The specific objectives of the current program were: .

1. To expand information on the distribution and movement of adult
Colorado squawfish to and from. spawning site locations with the use of
radiotagging. Area of study to include headwaters of Lake Powell, the
Gunnison, Colorado and Green rivers.

2. To verify flow requirements of adult Colorado squawfish in relation
to spawning success and survival of larval Colorado squawfish.

3. To determine effects of flow fluctuations at Flaming Gorge Dam on
the survival and rearing of youug-of-the-year (YOY) and juventieColorado
s quawf ish.

Studies were initiated during the spring of 1982 and concluded during
the fall of 1984. Objectives were basin-w1de in scope but most of the
funding provided by BOR was devoted to work on the Green ltiver conducted

1
