Humpback chub life-cycle partitions were difficult to define because
fish less than 200 mm TL cannot be differentiated from. the roundtail
chub. As a result, nearly all criteria for humpback chub have been
extrapolated from. observations of the adult size group and are predicated
upon the assumption that all life-stages inhabit the same general vicinity.

Until 1984 razorback sucker collections were primarily incidental to
activi ties directed toward the other two species of more prominent
concern because of their endangered species status. In 1984 a pilot
project was carried out to locate and study razorback spawning activity
in the upper Green River.

Sensitive Reach Criteria

The designation of tmportant river reaches for different phases of a
fishes life-cycle assumes that certain river reaches offer unique
physical conditions conducive to the cCJllpletion of that phase or pre-
ferred by individuals in that phase. Also, since m.uch of the infor-
mation we have on these fishes is capture data, many of the conclusions
relative to important reaches or preferred habitats assume that fish
abundance is due to habitat preference or the presence of necessary
habitat constituents. Therefore, in establishing criteria that defined
important reaches, catch statistics were most often utilized which
differentiated reaches by a higher catch rate than the rest of the river
system. An exception has been the designations derived from. direct
observations of fishes tracked by radio, primarily in the delineation of
spawning areas.

9
