; ,

.
, .

e

e

7

Results and Discussion

Large numbers of green and ripe fish were taken with overnight sets

of gill nets in the St_ Maries River on June 20. Water temperature on

that date was 10 C. Spawning may have been occurring prior to that date

however. By June 26 the water temperature had increased to 12 C and many

fish rema~ned in the area but 25 percent of those taken were spent. On

June 27 the catch was much lower than for similar amounts of effort during

the previous week and almost all fish captured were spent. This apparent

termination of spawning activity corresponded with a sudden drop in water

temperature to 7 C in two days due to a rain storm, so it is unknown if

spawning activity had ended for the year or if it was merely suspended due

to unfavorable temperatures.

Spawning was already in full swing when work began on the St. Joe

River. On July 1 when the first spawning site was located there were an

estimated three thousand spawners on that site alone. Many green and ripe

fish were taken in gill nets. Water temperature on that date was 11 C. On

July 8 water temperature was 13 C and the number of fish on the previously

mentioned site was unchanged.. Many more spent fish were taken that night than

previously. On July 12 only 20 to 30 fish remained on that spawning site.

Water temperature had increased to 16 C. During the period spawning

occurred, river discharge declined drastically and was accompanied by

a marked increase :in water clarity.

In the Clearw,:lter River, spawning was almost finished on July 14.

Host fish ta~en in nets were spent and water temperature was 18 C. A school

of S to 6 hundred spawners located on July 20 had dispersed by July 21.

In the St. Maries River ripe fish were taken in the lower end ,;If the

fastwater a~ far ups~ream as Alder Creek. This section is between 9 and

12 tll11et5 from ton;;;,; river';:> 'fi~Hth. Most fish taken were netted in pool areas
