Below

Marble Creek the river valley is still fairly broad but above it narrows,

gradient steepens, riffles predominate and few deep pools are present.

Temperature varies little between fast and'slackwaters.

The St. Maries River flows into the St. Joe River at the town of

St. Maries approximately 14 miles above Coeur d'Alene Lake. Mean annual

,
flow at Santa is 364 cfs (USGS 1979). Slackwater extends 9 miles upriver,

mid-channel depth averages 4.3.m and width averages 42 m. Above the

slackwater the river flows through a steep walled canyon for 12 miles

below Washburn. Pools up to 6 meters deep are present in the lower portion

of this reach but are replaced by riffles farther up. Above Washburn the

river meanders through a broad, cultivated valley.

The most abundant fish species in the St. Joe River and St. Maries

River fastwaters include largescale suckers (Catostomus macrochellus),

brldgelip suckers (Catostomus columbianus). mountain whitefish (Prosopium

williamsoni), cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki), redside shiners (Richardsonius

balteatus), dace (Rhinichthys sp.) and sculpin (Cottus sp.) in addition to

northern squawfish.

The Clearwater River (Fig. 1) drains the west slope of the Bitterroot

Mountains immediately south of the St. Joe and St. Maries river drainages.

It joins the Snake River at Lewiston where water from Lower Granite Reservoir

on the Snake backs water into the lower few miles of the Clearwater. Major

tributaries include north and south forks and the Lochsa and Selway rivers.

Dworshak Reservoir on the north fork just above the mainstem produces

pronounced daily fluctuations in flow in the mainstem below Ahsahka, however,

tne rest of the tributaries are unregulated. Lochsa and Selway rivers drain

forest while the south fork drains a cultivated valley. Mean annual discharge

, .
.t Orofinb 1s 9,04' .f. (USGS 19'Q).
