.. .~

Element Global Ranking Form as of 04 JUN 1996
NOTROPIS TOPEKA

Identifiers:
ELCODE: AFCJB28960
GNAME: NOTROPIS TOPEKA
ELDESCRIP: A 2-inch fish (shiner).

EO Specifications:
EOSPECS: An element occurrence (EO) is a local breeding populationj
occurrences separated by an impassable barrier or by more
than three stream kilometers of apparently unoccupied
habitat should be treated as separate EOs.

ARANKSPECS: Small streams with permanent, clear pools, high water
quality and with hydrology not substantially alteredj 40+
fish or >15% of total fish captured in several seine hauls.

BRANKSPECS: Habitat as in ARANKSPECSj 20+ fish or >5% of total fish
captured in several sein hauls.

CRANKSPECS: Larger streams or less suitable stream conditions (e.g.,
altered hydrology, low water quality, high silt loads) j 5+
individuals or <5% of total fish captured in several sein
hauls.

DRANKSPECS: Habitat as in CRANKSPECSj small population (<5 fish) or
species not present every sampling date.

Descriptors:
TAXDIST: D TAXON. STAT: A
GTAXCOM: Because the name NOTROPIS TOPEKA is a junior synonym of
MONIANA TRISTIS Girard, 1856, Mayden and Gilbert (1989)
proposed that the specific name TOPEKA should be replaced by
the name TRITIS. This suggestion was adopted by Page and
Burr (1991). However, the name TRISTIS has been unused since
its proposal. A petition has been submitted to the ICZN to
conserve the famliar name TOPEKA. Pending the ICZN decision,
the 1991 AFS checklist (Robins et al. 1991) retained the
name as N. TOPEKA. ^NOTROPIS TOPEKA evidently is related to
N. STRAMINEUS and is a member of the N. PROCNE species-group
(genetic data of Schmidt and Gold, Copeia 1995:1991-204) .

OLD.TAXCOM:

GEXEMPSITE: MILL CREEK DRAINAGE, WABAUNSEE COUNTY, KANSAS
HABITAT:

PERMANENCE: Permanent, with fluctuating population size. Occasionally
found in larger streams, presumably as migrants.

Rankinq Factors:
GESTEOS : C
GESTEOSCOM: 20-40 extant EOs in 6 midwestern states.

GABUND: C
GABUNDCOM: Occupies more than 250 stream miles but often uncommon in
suitable habitat.
