The 2002 Augmentation Plan (Ryden 2002; draft) should be finalized by December 2002. The
plan's objective is to achieve 5,800 adult razorback sucker between RM 159.0 and 0.0. The
details of the plan are: stocking will occur over 8 years, all stocked fish will be > 300 mm TL,
survival estimates will be the same as those in the State of Colorado stocking plan, and all fish
will be stocked at RM 158.6.

Colorado pikeminnow.- The objectiye of 1996-2000 experimental stockings was to study the
survival, dispersal, retention, and habitat use of stocked Colorado pikeminnow. During
1996-2000,827,449 age-O and larval Colorado pikeminnow were stocked at several sites
between RM 158.6 and 52.0. Age-O fish survived better than larval fish (which had high
mortality). The fish had large downstream displacements. Several hundred, about 350 mm TL,
have been recaptured. In 1997 and 2001, respectively, 49 and 148 adult Colorado pikeminnow
were stocked at RM 180.2. The objective of these stockings was range expansion.
Unfortunately, fish were small for their age, in poor condition, and had ich (lchthyophthirius
multifilis). Adults stocked in 1997 experienced close to 100% mortality; those stocked in 200 ]
appeared to be surviving better, but were still emaciated.

The objective ofthe 2001 Augmentation Plan (Ryden 2001; draft) is to achieve 800 adult
Colorado pike minnow between RM 180.0 and 0.0. The details of the plan are: stocking will
occur over 8 years, minimum of 200,000 age-O fish will be stocked the first year and 352,000 in
following years, survival estimates will be the same as those in the State of Colorado stocking
plan and from OsmlIDdson's research, two stocking sites (RM 180.2 and 158.6), and age-O fish
will be obtained from Dexter National Fish Hatchery broodstock.

Stocking numbers differ from those of Colorado and Utah Stocking plans to achieve the same
numerical criteria should be the same. There is a need to agree on a single rate and duration of
stocking in each subbasin. San Juan plan calls for 200,000 age-O fish/year for 8 years to achieve
800 adult Colorado pikemilIDow for 6 years. SJRRIP has requested 352,000age-0 Colorado
pikeminnow from Dexter. Dexter cannot provide that many this year. Age-O fish obtained from
Dexter can be reared to age 1 at the 24-Road and Mmnma hatcheries, and a portion of these
provided to the SJRRIP (not compatible with existing draft stocking plan). UCRRP has been
providing fish to the SJRRIP for 4 years.

Survival of age-O fish is better than expected. Plan looks only at age-7 fish. Plan needs to
address age-5+ Colorado pikeminnow for consistency with recovery goals (i.e., 1,000 age 5+
Colorado pikeminnow needed in the San Juan River to downlist).

Rearing Colorado pikeminnow to 150+ mm 1L requires a lot of hatchery space to separate
Colorado pikeminnow by size-class to minimize cannibalism on smaller fish.

8
